Waterfowl banding is a vital conservation tool that helps biologists track the movements and survival of individual birds. By placing a uniquely numbered band on each bird, researchers can gather valuable information about migration patterns, distribution, and longevity when the bird is recaptured or reported. Banding events also provide an opportunity to collect biological samples—such as blood, oral, and cloacal swabs—to monitor potential disease exposure in wild populations.

Each year, Wildlife Health Program staff participate in the DEC Waterfowl Banding Workshop, where they present on topics including safe handling, animal care, euthanasia, common waterfowl diseases, and field sampling techniques. The workshop also includes live bird handling, providing participants with practical experience in safe handling and sample collection.
