Dr. Krysten Schuler, wildlife disease ecologist with the New York State Wildlife Health Program, testified before the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee – Oversight Subcommittee on June 25. The topic was chronic wasting disease (CWD), a serious threat to deer and elk populations. CWD has been detected in 26 states thus far. Once CWD becomes established in a population, it is nearly impossible to eradicate. Therefore, it is critical to follow the “precautionary principle” when dealing with CWD and take preventative action in the face of uncertainty. There are currently several bills in Congress related to CWD.
